WHY TO STUDY.

LANGUAGES AND TRANSLATION FOR DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

Those who earn the two-year second-cycle degree will be able to hold senior positions in private companies, public agencies and international institutions in the fields of interpreting, translation and digital communication.

Course Objectives.

The aim of the course is to ensure in-depth training in the principles of interpretation, translation and digital communication. Those who earn the two-year second-cycle degree will be able to combine knowledge of the languages of study and the Italian language with a solid understanding of the structure and functioning of languages both in general and with particular reference to the languages of study. They will also be able to apply this knowledge to the practice of interpreting and translating, for which they will have developed skills, and in activities devoted to the acquisition of documentation, writing, editing and proofreading of texts. They will also be able to take care of digital communication at high corporate and institutional levels both nationally and internationally.

Essential course content

The courses include activities aimed at acquiring:
In-depth knowledge of the languages of study;
In-depth knowledge of sectorial languages, including with regard to the world of publishing;
Methodological skills in interpreting and/or translation techniques;
Ability to critically use the tools indispensable to the profession of interpreter and/or translator (e.g. software, computer aids, documentary sources and any other tools and/or resources).
Ability to use digital communication and marketing tools.
Skills related to setting up and managing a digital marketing strategy.
Skills related to managing multilingual e-commerce and Remarketing and Retargeting tools.
Possible CMS management skills, Multilingual Site Construction and Coding elements.

Artificial Intelligence for Translation

Included in the curriculum is a subject that explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence applied to translation. Cat Tools will be used, Machine Translation and the technique of Post-editing as well as Localization will be analyzed.
The newest frontiers of AI (Artificial Intelligence) will be an integral part of the skills built by students over the three-year period.

Course organization

The course has a two-year duration corresponding to 120 educational credits (60 for each academic year). The credits corresponding to each formative activity are acquired by the student after passing an examination, the outcome of which is expressed by a grade in thirtieths (proficiency examinations) and in hundredths with possible honors (final examination). The curriculum includes the compulsory study of 2 two-year foreign languages chosen by the student from the following: CHINESE - ENGLISH - FRENCH - SPANISH - GERMAN as well as related subjects related to Advanced Digital Communication. The teaching of the subjects included in the curriculum is carried out through semester or annual courses divided in turn into lectures, seminars and tutorials. Attendance is compulsory for all subjects in the curriculum, under penalty of non-admission to the relevant examinations, and is evidenced by the appropriate certificates from the teachers. A student who exceeds 25 percent of the scheduled absences for that course will not be admitted to the proficiency examinations.

Teaching in courses

The training activities of the courses are entrusted to professors and researchers from Italian and foreign universities, possessing specific qualification in the relevant scientific-disciplinary fields. The training activities of the courses are also entrusted to experts possessing specific, suitable and documented qualification in interpreting, translation, language mediation and digital communication, as well as documented professional experience acquired in activities related to the same subjects.
The recruitment of teachers is carried out according to selective procedures marked by the criteria of comparative and public evaluation. The Scientific Technical Committee publishes an annual call for applications to fill vacancies and evaluates the curricula of candidates who have applied for recruitment.

Internship

The course of study includes the obligation of external activities, such as internships and apprenticeships, relevant to the educational objectives of the course of study for a total of 20 CFM, to be carried out at public and private entities within the framework of specific agreements.

We are using Phrase in our translation courses free of charge. Phrase is a complete translation platform that includes translation memory, integrated machine and human translation, terminology management, and both online and desktop CAT tools.

Final Examinations

In order to be admitted to the final examination for the degree that is equivalent for professional and competitive purposes to the class of master's degrees in specialized translation and intepreting (LM-94), the student must have passed all the profit examinations and have obtained the credits stipulated in the study plan. For the awarding of the second-cycle degree, a final project is expected to be submitted, elaborated in an original way by the student under the guidance of a supervisor chosen among university professors and researchers, which must take into account both the theoretical/practical activities carried out during the course and the internship activities. The Commission for the Diploma examinations consists of 7 members.
The Commission for the final examination includes a university professor and an expert, both appointed by the Ministry.

Registration

To matriculate in the two-year course in Specialist Translation and Interpreting (LM-94 ex art. 4 M.D. May 3, 2018 n.59), it is necessary to have obtained degrees pertaining to the classes of three-year degrees in Linguistic Mediation (L12) or Modern Languages and Cultures (L11). Other degrees referred to in Decree No. 59 of May 3, 2018, or other foreign degree recognized as equivalent may be evaluated for admission purposes.

Registration requires:

A. Fill out the "Matriculation File" in its entirety and submit it directly to the teaching secretary by appointment or send it to the email segreteria@mediatorelinguistico.it;
B. Proceed with the payment of the tuition (including fees, contributions and teaching materials) provided by the regulations, by bank transfer or directly at the teaching secretary's office, choosing one of the attached forms;
C. Attach the following documents to the completed file:
- Certificate of Bachelor's Degree or reserve the right to submit it later if in progress;
- Photocopy of a valid ID and Social Security Number;
- No. 1 jpeg digital passport-size photograph to be sent to the e-mail address segreteria@mediatorelinguistico.it;
- No. 1 €16.00 revenue stamp.

Scholarships

Ministerial Decree

Scuola Superiore per Mediatori Linguistici, based in Palermo at Via Benedetto Gravina 41A, is authorized to grant, upon completion of the two-year course of study provided by the regulations, diplomas that are equivalent for professional and competitive purposes to the master's degree class in specialized translation and interpreting (LM-94), pursuant to Decree of the Ministry of University and Research No. 1871 of 23-7-2021
